Tobacco Control

The Fall River Tobacco Control Program is part of a collaborative serving 9 cities/towns in Western Bristol County. We serve Boards of Health in Attleboro, Berkley, Dighton, Fall River, Norton, Somerset, Swansea, Taunton and Westport as part of the collaborative. Our mission is to promote, implement and enforce policies to reduce youth access to tobacco and nicotine products, as well as to ensure retailer compliance of all tobacco related regulations.

Services

Fall River Tobacco Permit Application: Permits are valid January 1-December 31. All tobacco retailers must have a valid Tobacco Permit.
Cessation: Tobacco use can lead to tobacco dependence and serious health conditions. Smoking causes cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung diseases, diabetes, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Quitting smoking greatly reduces the risk of developing smoking-related health conditions.
Compliance Checks: Inspections are performed utilizing an underage buyer who attempts to purchase tobacco products at retail stores under the supervision of the Tobacco Control Director or an authorized inspector. This is an effective way of determining a retailers overall rate of compliance with current tobacco regulations.
Retail Inspections: Inspections are performed at least once per year to ensure that retailers are in compliance with tobacco regulations. Inspections are a great opportunity to provide tobacco related education to retailers, and aids in the prevention of violations.
Complaint Investigations: Inspections are occasionally performed to investigate complaints against a retailer. The inspector looks for illegal sales of tobacco products, and any other alleged violations of the tobacco regulations.
